Crossfit Event (Girls Gone RX)

Hey everyone it your Denver Chiropractor Dr. Joseph Vear, I wanted to share a great experience I had this last weekend working alongside a great network of medical professionals in the coordination of care for one of the two largest Crossfit events here in Colorado. This event hosted over 600 Crossfit athletes and started from 8am and went till 6pm. During that time our medical staff helped prepare each athlete for competition with chiropractic care, massage, taping, cryotherapy. I want to thank Dr. David Newton for organizing the team of professionals who provided care for the day and give a shout-out to some new friends I made at the event, Dr. Reid Nelles, Levi Faustino, Rachel Voyles and Christen Dybenko. Thank you guys for your support and I look forward to working with you all again in the future. Here are some of the pictures I have from working the Crossfit event this last weekend.

Shoulder Injury & Potential Causes

Shoulder pain is a growing concern of many athletes today. Despite the level of competition – whether you’re exercising to maintain your health, a professional athlete, or the parent of an active, young athlete – the activities in our daily lives that involve shoulder mobility are countless. This information this information can be vital to not only your performance but also your everyday function.

Effective shoulder function requires proper motion, stability, muscle performance and motor control. In order for this to happen, the brain and the body need to be on the same page from a neuromechanical standpoint, this is where chiropractic care can help. By removing subluxations/misalignment’s in the spine, our body’s ability to relay this communication is improved and therefore, muscle function and stability (proprioception) of the shoulder joint are as well. However, this may not be the only problem that someone is faced with when dealing with shoulder problems. The soft tissue around the shoulder including muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia also plays a vital role and therefore need to be addressed when treating someone with a shoulder complaint.

Altered shoulder motion can occur from a number of reasons, including but not limited to: injury, muscle imbalances/overcompensation, scar tissue, myofascial restrictions, overuse, nerve interference, improper training, atrophy, rib dislocation/subluxations and the list goes on. These issues, if not addressed, can lead to altered movement patterns and ultimately a laundry list of other problems. Here are just a few of these problems, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff injury, frozen shoulder, labral tear, thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), osteoarthritis, bursitis, tynosynovitis, tendonitis, fibromyalgia and more.

The high complexity of this joint and its many muscular, ligamentous and myofascial attachments can create a nightmare of problems for any individual -, especially athletes trying to reach their peak performance. That is why it is extremely important for any individual who is or dealing with a shoulder complaint to seek appropriate help from a certified extremity expert when dealing with shoulder pain.

Here at True From Chiropractic, Dr. Joseph Vear has experience treating these issues, utilizing his training as a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (CCEP), Active Release Technique (ART) provider and Rock Tape specialist, not only can he help you reduce your pain, but increase movement, function and stability of the shoulder as well.

Headaches- True Form Chiropractic

Do you, a loved one or someone you know suffer from headaches? Have these headaches kept you from work, playing with your kids or enjoying your personal life? If your answer is yes, you are not alone. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 Americans experience headaches from one time or another, so chances are you may be one of them. The frequency and severity may vary, but the source of these headaches could be directly related to your spine and the surrounding soft tissue.

Headache Picture

Today more Americans spend their time glued to their phones, playing Pokemon go, or stuck at a desk job in the same sedentary positions for hours on end. Over time this causes increasing joint irritation and muscle tension in your neck, upper back and head. When your spinal vertebra are out of place there is muscle tension, likewise if your muscles are in consent tension they can directly effect you spinal alignment. This unnecessary pressure can then impact your nerves that travel out of your spinal column and innervate ever cell, tissue and organ in your entire body. This negative consequence then sends pain signals from your muscles in your neck and back to your brain, leading to potential headaches.

There has been numerous research in the last twenty years that has shown chiropractic care to be an effective alternative to relieve headaches, rather then resorting to invasive approaches such as drugs and even surgery. Looking at the research there has been a number of studies done that show chiropractic care as well as other soft tissue treatments, such as Active Release Technique (ART) to be a viable solutions to this issue. When treating someone suffering from headaches special attention should be placed on the upper cervical muscles. This area in particular has a vast array of neurological implications on weather or not a headache can manifest and to what degree. Utilizing specific chiropractic adjustments and myofascial release techniques to this area of the spine can have dramatic benefits.

Some tips to potentially reduce the occurrence of headaches include:
Stretch at least thirty minutes a day, if you spend a lot of time in a sedentary position
Drinking water throughout the day to avoid dehydration
Perform low impact exercise daily
Get plenty of sleep by following a regular sleep schedule
Minimize chemicals in your food by eating whole, organic plant foods and avoiding processed foods

Upper and Lower Crossed Syndrome

Upper and Lower Crossed Syndrome
Upper and Lower Crossed Syndrome has effected many of today’s society. From athletes, teachers, computer technicians or anyone who works at a computer or is glued to their phone all day has at one time or another experienced symptoms related to upper or lower crossed syndrome.

Typical symptoms of upper or lower crossed syndrome can include headaches, neck stiffness, neck pain, weakness, leg pain, low back pain, tight muscles, hip impingement and many others. But why does this happen and what can you do about it? Typically these changes occur due to overactive or (over facilitated muscles) and under active or (under utilized muscles). Most “Desk Jockey’s” who are in a rounded and forward head posture position all day tend to have increased activation of their posterior neck muscles and under activation of the deep neck flexors used for postural stabilization.
BAD-POSTURE

Over time this can lead to increase pressure on the cervical spine and surrounding musculature, causing a forward shift of the head into what is called an antalgic head position. If not corrected this can cause increased pressure on the neck and surrounding tissue, resulting in adhesion’s (knots) and spasms to develop and eventually causing degeneration of the cervical (neck) spine itself. Likewise lower crossed syndrome can cause similar type effects on the lumbar spine (lower back) due to the typically overactive iliopsoas muscle (hip flexor) and your erector spine (back muscles). This can cause an anterior pull on the lumbar spine and result in facet impingement in your lower back and also contribute to hip impingement syndrome.

Lower crossed syndrome
